Barthes

Barthes

Linford Christie

This picture shows Linford Christie after winning the 100m final. the picture was published in the newspapers for all the wrong reasons. The newspapers pointed out something very embarrassing and this became a national mocking frame. Because of this the whole succession and overall achievement element was took as the picture was no longer a symbol of his victory but a picture of his embarrassing moment.
This relates the Barthes' theory as he says media texts are a big ball of threads. When the threads are unravelled then the text opens up to all new meanings. This is true within this case. The text was symbolising his great victory and achievement, however when the text was unravelled it opened up to lots of different meanings.

This picture shows carl lewis and olympic runner posing for Pirelli tyres. We see how Lewis is wearing a pair of high heels whilst in the starting position for a race. when we read into the text we could say that Lewis is wearing the heels in order to show the reader that women can be just as superior as men within the racing world. Lewis was seen as the fastest man on the planet at this moment in time and was seen as a man of power.
When we read further into the text we can see how maybe Lewis was trying prove a point that pirelli calendar should not always include women being objectified but should include men as well. The caption on the top of the advert says 'Power is nothing without control' this refers to Lewis being the most powerful man within the sport but he must control the power and use it properly. The heels act as  an object of the hurdles and difficulties Lewis may face.

Representation of Age

Representation of Age

Children – Often shown as being young, innocent, naive, pure, sweet, helpless, and powerless.

Teenagers – Often shown as being aggressive, moody, lazy, criminals, hate school, disrespectful, not caring, no responsibility.

20’s-30’s – Often shown as the ideal age for love, parties, and fun, making money, being glamorous and attractive.  In films the heroes are often this age group.

Middle Aged – Often shown as being past it, unattractive, not aware of popular culture, uncool, boring lives, dominant over others, no real connection to their kids, grumpy.  In films the villains are often from this age group.

Elderly – Often shown as being unattractive, slow, weak, ill, confused, pathetic, powerless, not important and dependent on others.

Iconography

Iconography

·      Which characters do you think are the most important in this scene?
i    I think the man with the spherical object is an important character as the strange object gives us the sense of importance. he is openly speaking to all the members of the group and is made to look big. I also the think the man in the army uniform is also important due to the uniform and the object he is studying. The objects and the uniform are good iconography as they are symbolising something important.

·      What do the props in the foreground and background tell you about what is happening?
t    The army uniform of the man symbolises disaster and the army are usually the first on the scene in disastrous situations. we can also see a lot of paperwork and a chalkboard in the background this may have writing on referring to the disaster.

·      What typical elements of the disaster movie genre are evident in this frame?
The typical elements of a disaster movie that are evident are strange objects and the armed forces. this gives us a real sense of urgency as panic as we see the armed forces as serious.

AS Media Production

AS Media Production

For my media production I will produce a football magazine. The iconography included will be mainly football orientated with maybe a football, football field, teams, kits, certain trophies included within football.
I will also have colours aimed towards a male audience as the majority of the mass footballing audience is male. I will also have  a sans serif font as the male audience may not be interested in an elegant font on the front of a footballing magazine.

Footballing Magazines:
Match Of The Day

FourFourTwo

Magazine Analysis

Magazine Analysis

Bliss magazine

colours - The colours included are pink, baby blue, white and black. these colours tell us that the magazine is aimed at females as the colours are female orientated.

Title block -  The title is a very bold title in pink and is a sans serif font. The title appears to give a very friendly mode of address.

Mode of Address -  Direct mode of address is used as taylor swift is looking directly at the audience but in a friendly way. taylor appears to be very elegant.

Buzz words -  the magazine uses words such as exclusive, perfection, overload, hot.

Content -  within this magazine there appears to be a large amount of content as the front cover is packed with puffs which gives the reader an insight into what the can expect within the magazine. there also appears to be a fashion section that will appeal to the female audience even more

Audience -  We can easily gather that the primary audience is a female audience aimed towards females within the 10 - 16 age range.  with regards to the uses and gratifications theory i would say the magazine aims to help with identification as fashion is included and a female pop icon is the main cover picture. she is also very attractive which means young girls may want to be like her. i would also say the magazine would be for entertainment and for social interaction as the audience may want to read about taylor swift and discuss with their friends. Also According to the NRS audience classification i would say that this magazine belongs to class E as the magazine is aimed at young people but their parents will have to buy the magazine so this can be debated. the magazine is priced at £2.50.
